1st Dental plans to grow product range

Dental group 1st Dental Laboratories has revealed that it plans to grow its product range and resources in 2009, after a difficult trading period. In a trading update, the Harrogate-based group said the results for the year ended November 30 would be ‘disappointing’ due to business disruptions.

In a statement, the company added: “However these disruptions at both our Stourport and Blackpool laboratories are well into recovery, with Stourport reporting a healthy profit, and as the year closes being back on budget and Blackpool starting to return to profit. We remain confident in the underlying business with many units performing well with some branches showing continued growth especially in the Midlands and Yorkshire areas.”
1st Dental also offers an online service called e-teeth, which allows dentists to buy products at competitive prices. E-teeth closed the year with an "impressive rate of growth" and continued to provide 1st Dental with record breaking monthly turnover numbers in the final months of the financial year.
Nigel Spring, the managing director, has been introducing new practices and procedures to business units. A new sales force of seven staff has been recruited. The company said that the early results of the extra marketing and sales activities has been encouraging, and promised to show good growth with the base business in 2009 and beyond. The group expects to announce its preliminary results along with the publication of the company’s annual report and accounts on February 11.
It has also been announced today that John Hayhurst will be resigning from the board on December 31. Commenting on his departure, Mr Hayhurst said: “Andrew Garner invited me to join the board on the acquisition of Benchmark group of laboratories. As the representative of the major shareholder I have seen Andrew strengthen the management team, especially with the arrival of the company’s new MD Nigel Spring. I have confidence that I’m leaving the board with a professional team in place that is the best it has ever been.”
