Hammond disappoints NHS bosses

The extra money announced by the Chancellor in the Budget for the NHS in England is not enough, health service bosses say. Philip Hammond announced an immediate £350m boost for this winter followed by £1.6bn more next year for the front line above the rise already planned. He also said any pay rises for NHS staff next year would not need to come from the front-line budget.
Other points from the budget, which may be of interest to dentists:
- The Office for Budget Responsibility revises GDP growth for 2017 down to 1.5% from 2%
- Extra £3bn to be set aside over next 2 years to cover ‘every possible outcome’ in Brexit
- National Living Wage to rise 4.4% from £7.50/hr. to £7.83/hr w.e.f April 2018
- Personal Tax Allowance to rise to £11,850 and the higher rate threshold to £46,350 w.e.f. April 2018
- Business Rates for small firms – planned switch from RPI to CPI to be brought forward to April 2018
- Stamp Duty for all first time buyers immediately abolished for purchases up to £300,000
