CQC says dental services remain low risk

The British Dental Association (BDA) has welcomed the latest Care Quality Commission (CQC) State of Care report, which has again revealed the low risk, good quality care delivered in English dental practices. Mick Armstrong, Chair of the BDA, said: “The care provided by dental services combines low risk and good quality – which is something our profession has always known.”

The Care Quality Commission carried out 714 inspections of primary dental care services in 2014/15. It concluded that, compared to other sectors dental services present a lower risk to patients’ safety, that the majority of dental services are safe and that the quality of care is good. The low risk has prompted the CQC to move to a model of inspecting just 10 per cent of all practices each year.

Mick Armstrong, Chair of the BDA, said: “In recent years we’ve seen a clear and consistent picture emerge from inspections by the CQC. The care provided by dental services combines low risk and good quality – which is something our profession has always known. It’s also a reminder why the new approach to dental inspections was the right choice.”
