GDC remains defiant over JR

In a letter from Evlynne Gilvarry Chief Executive of the General Dental Council (GDC) to Peter Ward Chief Executive of the British Dental Association (BDA) she acknowledges that ‘there was a procedural error in the ARF level consultation’. But she says they ‘will use the additional funds to forge (sic) further improvements in our performance.’ She ends by looking forward ‘to working with you and your colleagues constructively’ in 2015.

Thank you for your letter dated 18 December raising points about our press statement following the outcome of the judicial review.
Our press statement clearly states that we recognise that Mr Justice Cranston found there was a procedural error in the ARF level consultation. However the judge also noted that it was to the GDC’s credit that we showed every intention of conducting a transparent consultation, but that in one specific area - our projection of fitness to practise hearings - we failed to do so.
We acknowledge the judge’s comments about the consultation process and we are committed to ensuring all future consultations have the higher level of transparency and detail required.
As you are aware, we will use the additional funds to forge further improvements in our performance and we are determined over the course of 2015 to work with the dental profession, the public and with you to examine the cause of rising complaints and to do what we can to ensure they are dealt with at the most appropriate level. We are also determined to use imminent legal changes to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the early stages of our fitness to practise processes.
