Little change in Wales NHS dental statistics

Recently published statistics show that there has been little change in number of patients seen or courses of treatment carried out. The number of courses of treatment rose by 1.1% and the percentage of the population seen rose from 54.7% to 54.9%. But Plaid Cymru said the fact that almost half of adults had not received any treatment highlighted a problem with the number of available NHS dentists.

The quarterly statistics for NHS dentistry in Wales from October–December2013 were recently published.

They show that a total of 1.27 million Units of NHS Dental Activity (UDAs) were carried out, an increase of 0.5 per cent compared to the same period last year . This represented approximately 585,250 individual courses of treatment (CoTs), an increase of 1.1 per cent when compared to the same period last year. Compared with the previous quarter, July to September 2013, the UDAs have increased by 4.3 per cent. The band with the most UDAs was Band 2 (fillings and extractions) accounting for 39.1 per cent of the total with 497,652 UDAs.

1.69 million Patients were recorded as having been treated in the 24 months before 31 December 2013 amounting to 54.9 per cent of the population. 64.5 per cent of the child population (under 18 years old) and 52.4 per cent of the adult population (18 years or over) were treated in the previous 24 months. This is a slight increase from the same period last year, when 54.7 per cent of the population was treated.
