Tooth whitening news is brighter

With the European Council having recently published the European Cosmetics Directive, the future of dental whitening is beginning to look marginally brighter according to the British Dental Bleaching Society. The new directive will allow dentists to supply patients with products containing up to 6% hydrogen peroxide, a significant leap from the current UK limit of 0.1%.

The European scientific community, however, has already conducted extensive research into the benefits of products exceeding this new 6% limit, showing some very promising results. With the deadline looming for the European Cosmetics Directive to come into effect in the UK, the benefits this research shows are at serious risk of being prematurely discarded.

The British Dental Bleaching Society is one of a number of organisations lobbying to have the new limit raised further still in light of these findings. With the UK government having until September 2012 to amend its laws to comply with the directive, these lobbying groups have just 8 months before this 6% limit is set in stone.
