FGDP(UK) celebrates 25 years with Awards dinner

FGDP(UK) celebrates 25 years with Awards dinner

The Faculty of General Dental Practice UK (FGDP(UK)) held an anniversary dinner on Friday 13th October to commemorate 25 years since it was established. Hosted at Drapers Hall in London, the dinner included three very special awards to reflect the everyday commitment of General Dental Practitioners to their practice and their patients.

Dr Mick Horton, Dean of FGDP(UK), opened the evening by reflecting on the role of the Faculty now and into the future:

“Our anniversary celebration is a great occasion for us to look forward to our new future.  We are now laying the foundations for forming a new chartered medical college after 25 successful years at RCS.

“It’s a bold step: one that we believe will inspire our members and open a gateway to new partnerships that promote professionalism in dentistry. For the public and for patients, a clearly identifiable, confident and active standard-setting body will help us to cultivate greater confidence in dentistry overall. We want to focus on developing the appeal of a modern medical college for new generations entering practice.

“We are delighted to award our Anniversary prizes to three extremely worthy winners.  Their own personal achievements mirror the quality of standards and the diversity within the general dental profession, and we congratulate them on their awards.”

Award Winners

Foundation Dentist of the Year – Claire Culverwell

Claire works as a Dental Associate at Crook Log Dental Practice in South East London. Her career began as a Dental Nurse, before studying Dental Hygiene and Therapy at the University of Liverpool. She then decided to study Dental Surgery at King’s College London and was nominated by her Foundation trainer, Baber Khan.

Claire commented: “I went the long way around to my career in dentistry, but I am glad I did, because I’ve been in contact with patients from the very beginning, allowing me to develop a range of skills. This award means a lot to me, because getting to this point in my life has taken great effort and commitment. I wasn’t sure I would ever get there, but I know that all the effort has paid off. I’m surrounded by people who push me to be my best every day, and I’m loving every minute.”

Community Dentist of the Year – Jason Wong

This prize recognises GDPs and DCPs who have made a significant contribution to improving oral care in their local community, and was awarded through a process of open nomination by peers within the profession.

Jason commented: “I am honoured that a colleague had the thought and put in the effort to nominate me and delighted that the FGDP(UK) panel chose me for the award. I believe that we are all part of a great profession and that all of us who benefit from being part of it need to put something back in for the benefit of the whole profession.”

Dean’s Award – Dentaid

The Dean’s Award, sponsored by Simplyhealth, was presented to Dentaid for their support of the The Real Junk Tooth Project in the UK.

Andy Evans, CEO of Dentaid, said:

Everyone at Dentaid is delighted and honoured to win the Dean’s Award. In recent years, we have become increasingly aware that many people in the UK struggle to access dental treatment for a wide variety of reasons and this has a negative impact on their general wellbeing.  Thanks to an incredible team of volunteers, many vulnerable people and those who could not register with an NHS dentist in Dewsbury were able to visit a dental surgery in the evening, without an appointment, and receive pain relieving dental care.  They only paid if they could afford to.  Over seven months 150 people received emergency treatment thanks to the Real Junk Tooth Project.  Dentaid’s next step was to purchase a mobile dental unit so we could bring a similar service to other parts of the country.  This unit also went back to Dewsbury in September when we treated almost 200 people in two weeks at clinics held outside schools, community centres and public buildings.  We are very grateful to all our volunteers and supporters for enabling this project to be such a success.”

As part of the 25-year celebration the FGDP(UK) will also host a conference on Holistic Dentistry on 3rd November in Solihull.

Myths and reality at the BACD

Myths and reality at the BACD

The British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (BACD) Annual Conference will be opening its doors to delegates in November. In its fourteenth year, the BACD Annual Conference is, without a doubt, one of the most highly anticipated events in the professional calendar. This year focusing on ‘FAB: Function, Aesthetics, Biology’, the fully-filled, three-day event will be bringing together delegates from across the country for some of the most exceptional learning opportunities dentistry has to offer.

This includes a schedule of exclusive lectures, exciting presentations and inspiring hands-on sessions – all led by some of the profession’s leading lights. The line-up this year is better than ever and includes such names as Dr Nikos Mardas.

Nikos qualified in dentistry from Athens University and completed first a three-year postgraduate MS in periodontology and then a PhD at the Royal Dental College at the University of Aarhus in Demark.

He has experience in private practice as a specialist periodontist and has been appointed a senior lecturer at the Periodontology Unit at UCL, Eastman Dental Institute, as well as Senior Clinical Lecturer/ Honorary Consultant  in Periodontology at Bart’s & The London School of Medicine and Dentistry at the Queen Mary University London. He is also The Educational Delegate for the ITI UK & Ireland section. All combined, this means Nikos is one of the most knowledgeable periodontists working in the field today, and he will be bringing this wealth of understanding to the Academy’s Annual Conference in November.

Giving a lecture entitled Periodontal Plastic Surgery: myths and reality in gingival recession coverage, Nikos will be giving delegates an insight into the advanced concepts of modern periodontal plastic surgery. He says, “Periodontal plastic surgery refers to a great variety of procedures designed to restore form and function, and improve cosmetic disturbances around teeth and, increasingly, dental implants. Various flaps designs, soft tissue grafts and substitutes, together with micro-surgical techniques have been applied to correct different muco-gingival defects in a variety of clinical scenarios, ranging form gingival recession coverage to extraction socket management.

“My presentation will provide a summary of the evidence on the predictability of current treatment protocols for gingival recessions, utilising different techniques and biomaterials. I will be showing delegates different case examples and discussing the pros and cons of each to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of different techniques in every day clinical practice.

“I hope that delegates will be able to go back to their practice and diagnose different recession defects, understand their predictability and the difficulties encountered in their management and guide the motivated patient towards the most appropriate therapeutic approach, based on an estimation of local and systemic factors.”

With such a compelling topics, Nikos’s lecture will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of the BACD’s Annual Conference and will give delegates the knowledge and insight they need to go away and improve their daily practice.

Of course, the BACD Annual Conference is not simply one of the best opportunities for dental professionals to learn more about the modern profession, it is also a chance to see what the dental industry has to offer. Delegates will be treated to a three-day trade show throughout the conference, where they can get information on the latest technology and products on offer.

What’s more, there will be plenty of time to network with like-minded colleagues at any one of the BACD’s planned social events, meaning delegates will have a chance to let down their hair and reignite their passion for beautiful dentistry in a more relaxed environment.

Make sure you book your place today to ensure you do not miss out!

A Thoroughly Enjoyable and Worth While Course

A Thoroughly Enjoyable and Worth While Course

Jaswinder Gill, Principal of Moonlight Dental Surgery, has been offering anterior alignment orthodontics since 2012. He enrolled on the 12-month IAS Advanced training course in 2015 and says:

“I was looking to take my skills to the next level so I could provide comprehensive orthodontics to adults and children who have been refused by the NHS. There are very few courses out there that offer this for GDPs, but the IAS Advanced came highly recommended.

“I had no idea what to expect, but training covered everything I wanted it to and more. I particularly liked that I could start comprehensive cases from day one, being mentored by Ross Hobson, a Specialist Orthodontist.

“The course was excellent – there is no other word for it. Ross is a brilliant teacher and mentor.

“I have absolutely gained confidence in my skills and I am now doing cases that I would have definitely referred this time last year.

“If you want to progress your orthodontic career as a GDP, then this is the course to do. It entails a lot of hard work and is not a walk in the park, but if orthodontics is your thing then it is thoroughly enjoyable and worth while.”

GDPUK Conference 2016 - A Huge Success - Join us in 2017!

GDPUK Conference 2016 - A Huge Success - Join us in 2017!

Over 60 members of the GDPUK Community gathered at Hotel Football in Manchester on Friday 4th November to enjoy a day of learning, networking and thinking time away from the dental practice!

The mix of education, personal stories and music made for an incredibly diverse and interesting day.

Chris Tavares remarked;

“Thanks to the GDPUK Team for the absolute wonderful day I had today. Dentistry's been tense lately due to 'non-dental' things. Usually when I go on a course I'm really tired at the end of day due to the intensity of the lectures. Today was different. I really needed a chill out day and today absolutely nailed it. The speakers did a fantastic job keeping to their remit and the delivery was excellent. The topics were all very relevant to dentistry but in, oh so different a way, than the usual intense clinical procedures lectures. It's what I call the 4th Dimension of educational topics. The outside of the box topics. Each speaker spoke for the right length of time and kept us all very much glued to our seats. There was education, there was humour, there were personal journeys, there was music. Very much how the humanity of being a registrant is all about. Each topic was very 'functional' in creating a great chill out, educational and social event. Also great to put so many faces to posters. Unfortunately did not manage to meet everyone.”

Mike Powell via the GDPUK forum stated:-

“An excellent day with a variety of topics covered, not all "look how excellent my work is"......The catering was also massively better than the norm, fillet of beef with peppercorn sauce anyone? Thanks Tony and all the others involved in organising the day.”

Tony Jacobs, MD of GDPUK was really pleased with the outcome of the day:-

“We are so pleased with the positive feedback from everyone who attended the conference. As always, it was fantastic to meet old and new faces from the forum. We believe the mix of speakers from within dental circles and a couple from other sectors, helped form a day that was insightful, entertaining, unusual and thought provoking. We look forward to hosting another conference in 2017, which will mark the 20th year of GDPUK.”

Thanks to all our members who supported the event and thanks to all the sponsors for taking part. Dental Elite, Denplan and DDU all enjoyed the day thoroughly and we appreciate their support which makes a conference like this possible.

As you can see the 2016 GDPUK Conference was fantastic but 2017, promises to be even better!

If you would like to join us for the 2017 Conference for what will be an awesome day, please follow this link and book today. Further info on speakers can be found on the site.

“A superb course”

A-superb-course.jpg

Providing an in-depth educational pathway with multiple courses, the IAS Academy is dedicated to training GDP’s on the full range of orthodontic options, including the ClearSmile Brace.

Having previously completed training in several different appliances, Raoul Patel had been looking to build a foundation in orthodontics.

“Wanting to build my skillset, I undertook ClearSmile Brace training to add a new, safe, discreet and gentle appliance to effectively treat more of my patients,” says Raoul, who took the conversion course last April in London.

“The course I attended was excellent. It didn't waste any time going over basics, but focused more on diagnostics and the concept of anterior alignment orthodontics instead.

“The instruction during the training was very clear and because you need approval before beginning a case, the IAS Academy provides you with a sense of mentorship and support which is ultimately invaluable.

“If you are a GDP wanting to expand your orthodontic foundation, I would definitely recommend this course.”

To find out how you can develop your orthodontic skill-set using a fixed brace appliance, contact the IAS Academy today.

Revealing occlusion

Revealing occlusion

Dr Andy Lane is one of the UK’s foremost experts on dental occlusion and he will be delivering a seminal session on this commonly misunderstood field as part of Step Education’s exceptional new learning programme. Here, he details a few of the points he will be discussing…

“The relationship between all the components of the masticatory system in normal function, dysfunction, and parafunction, including the morphological and functional features of contacting surfaces of opposing teeth and restorations.” (Jablonski 1982).

This is an accurate definition of occlusion, but what we’re really concerned about when we study this field, and in particular, how we apply those principles in practice, is great dentistry. That’s dentistry that is appropriate and timely; looks good and feels comfortable; lasts as long as possible; needs as little maintenance as possible; and causes as little damage to other structures as possible.

“Occlusion” is a funny word, as in dentistry it means the way teeth bite and function together, but it’s also related to the word occluded, another word for closed, or hidden. Let’s face it; occlusion seems to be a subject that remains pretty closed and hidden to a lot of dentists doesn’t it?

Occlusion is really the secret of great dentistry. When we learn to understand occlusion fully we begin to understand that patients have been giving us multiple clues, both spoken and unspoken, that we may have missed over the years.

When designing the courses I have been involved with since 1985 in the UK, Niles Guichet and his Associates in NGA Seminars wanted to make very high-end, high quality, comfortable, long-lasting, aesthetic, functional, valuable dentistry available to all at affordable prices, not just to the super-rich in Hollywood as it had been. Great dentistry for all? It’s a noble goal.

The key to that kind of dentistry, the cornerstone, the guiding principle if you like, is occlusion. Without a thorough knowledge of occlusion much of what we do in dentistry is more unpredictable, open to chance, and potentially a lot more stressful. Occlusal principles provide the road map; they increase the certainty of knowing where you are, where you’ve been and where you’re going to end up.

As such, occlusion relates to almost every aspect of work that a dentist can carry out:

Diagnosis and Treatment Planning: To provide great dentistry we have to consider the role of occlusion in the aetiology of disease and the effect that occlusion will have on the prognosis of any intervention.

Fillings: Whenever we restore a tooth we have to assess how well that restoration will restore the function of that tooth, including any contacts with opposing and adjacent teeth. Failure to do this might result in heavy contacts that cause pain, fractures or mobility, or spaces that create instability.

Extractions: Whenever a tooth requires extraction we need to assess whether the resulting space will create instability in the occlusion. We must ask ourselves: A) if an extraction will affect function? B) are we removing the only tooth in contact on that side of the mouth? C) if so, what will be the consequences of that action?

We will also need to ask ourselves if the muscles of mastication or temporomandibular joints are healthy enough to allow you to perform a difficult extraction (e.g. a third molar) without causing an exacerbation of joint or muscle problems?

Orthodontics: Any form of orthodontic intervention will have a potentially major impact on the way teeth contact and upon the function of muscles and joints; it’s a form of full mouth reconstruction after all.

Crowns, bridges, veneers, implants, dentures: Whenever we provide advanced restorative solutions for patients, we’re certainly going to be changing the functioning surfaces of teeth most of the time. It is, of course, essential to have an understanding of the existing occlusal scheme and the occlusion that will be required in the new restoration in order to either conform with it or to plan a reorganized occlusion.

Occlusal Disease

It is commonly considered that the primary cause of dental disease is infection, resulting in periodontal disease and caries; certainly this is the focus of undergraduate training in most universities around the world. There is, however, a much wider range of diseases and symptoms that can be caused by, or are related to, occlusion. This is particularly true when parafunction, occlusal disharmony or a combination of both is present and those changes are enough to move the body beyond a position of adaptation and coping into a diseased state.

The range of such diseases will normally reflect the weakest link in the chain for that individual, so a similar cause may result in a wide variety of effects.

The weak link could be in muscles, joints, teeth or supporting structures. When the muscles are least able to adapt the result might be a headache, when the teeth and muscles adapt the jaw joints might suffer, and when the joints, muscles and periodontal tissues are able to adapt well, in the presence of parafunction, the teeth will wear away.

Occlusion is important in all aspects of dentistry, and by understanding the fundamental principles of this field, we can ensure better practice in our everyday provision of better dentistry.

“A high quality learning pathway”

A high quality learning pathway

“I was keen to take the Inman Aligner training course after attending an inspirational lecture by Dr. Tif Qureshi on ‘Align, Bleach and Bond’ at the FGDP,” says Dr. Rima Patel, who works at dental practices in Crystal Palace and Carshalton.

“Associates in both practices I work in had previously attended and begun offering the appliance to their patients – so there were always enquiries about it. I wanted to develop my skills, in order to also be able to offer patients what they wanted, rather than having to refer them to a colleague.

“I had expected there to be more people attending the course on the day – and the lecture to be more crowded. I was pleasantly surprised, however, that it was a small group, and that the lectures were of the highest quality. Everything was explained thoroughly and the hands-on element complemented the presentations.

“I would recommend the Inman Aligner training course to others, as I feel the IAS Academy has a structured learning pathway you can follow and the guidance and information provided was of a high quality and very detailed in nature.”

Education of the “highest quality”

Education of the highest quality.

Dr. Rima Patel, who works at dental practices in both Crystal Palace and Carshalton, recently took part in the Inman Aligner training course, provided by the IAS Academy.

“I attended the Inman Aligner training course in December 2014,” says Dr. Patel. “I initially booked a place following an inspirational lecture given by Dr. Tif Qureshi on ‘Align, Bleach and Bond’, held at the FGDP. He was also offering a small discount to attendees of that lecture, so it presented a great opportunity.

“Several of my colleagues had already been using the Inman Aligner – so patients were always enquiring about it. As a result, I wanted to be able to offer my own patients what they wanted, rather than having to refer them to a colleague.

“I had thought that the course would be crowded, that a lot of people would be attending the lecture – but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was a small group. The lecture was of the highest quality and everything was explained thoroughly; the hands-on element complemented the presentations very well.

“It was also great that there was a small trade fair running over lunch, which gave us the opportunity to meet and talk to different people from different companies.

“I would recommend the Inman Aligner training course to others, because I feel as though the IAS Academy provides a structured educational pathway for you to follow – and the guidance and information it offers is of a high quality and detailed in nature.”

The IAS Academy provides a number of training opportunities, including the Inman Aligner course, that are designed to give GDPs the confidence and expertise to offer their patients more in the way of alternative anterior alignment orthodontics. A truly unique and dedicated learning pathway, the IAS Academy focuses on education as much as it does on effective appliances, ensuring excellent levels of competence and success.

‘A very impressive course’ – from the IAS Academy

A very impressive course – from the IAS Academy

Dr. James Tinning of Pinfold Dental Practice, Cheshire took the London Inman Aligner hands-on training course.

“Following a seminar I attended presented by Tif Qureshi, I quickly realised that being able to offer patients the Inman Aligner system would be a great skill to add to my armamentarium.

“The course was excellent and very impressive – not only an informative and interesting day, but also a really enjoyable one as well. Instructors Tif Qureshi and James Russell were very professional and they were happy to spend time discussing potential cases.

“The appliance itself is very simple to use in practice and I have been able to use both the online support forum and help from NimroDENTAL laboratory to develop my knowledge of the Inman Aligner and treating more complex cases.

“I was impressed by the IAS academy hands-on training course and I would definitely recommend it to other colleagues.”

Pushing the Boundaries of Education and Training in Implant Dentistry

Pushing the Boundaries of Education and Training in Implant Dentistry

Clinical competency is the foundation for excellence in dentistry. Through high quality and on-going training and education, professionals acquire and develop the appropriate skills that enable them to deliver safe and effective dental treatment to their patients.

Particularly in such a fast-paced profession as dentistry, where techniques, materials and technologies are rapidly advancing and changing the way treatment is provided, remaining abreast of the latest innovations and ideas is vital. Not only does this ensure competency to treat patients in the most appropriate way, but it also allows practitioners to enhance the dental care and treatment they offer.

What’s more, it’s important to develop knowledge and understanding in a broad range of areas. For example, if you wish to offer implant treatment to patients it is clear that you need to complete advanced training so that you have the skills necessary for the provision of safe and effective services. However, even as a GDP who doesn’t provide such treatment directly to patients, you still need sufficient knowledge that will enable you to assess the health of implant supported restorations that you may encounter.

Whether clinicians require education for the placement, restoration or maintenance of dental implants, it is paramount that any training completed is of the highest calibre.

Passionate about improving awareness of and access to first-class tuition in the field is Ken Nicholson. Ken is the founder of the British Society of Oral Implantology, a Fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists and a member of the Faculty of Examiners at RCS Edinburgh, amongst many other accolades. He is also the founder of SmileTube.tv, a learning portal designed to ensure practitioners’ competency in implant treatment. He says:

“The widespread use and published success of dental implant supported restorations is encouraging more and more GDPs to become involved in this treatment modality. A visit to the dentist’s section of the Yellow Pages makes it difficult to ignore the fact that an increasing number of practitioners are using the label ‘Cosmetic and Implant Practice’. Ensuring the clinician has the appropriate knowledge and skills to undertake dental implant treatment is of paramount importance.

“The GDC’s required learning outcomes of undergraduate education for Dentists: The First Five Years states that dental students should ‘be familiar with dental implants as an option in replacing missing teeth’. UK-qualified dentists are not expected to practise implant dentistry without undertaking structured postgraduate training and assessment of competence.

“The first step towards treating a patient is case assessment, where attention to detail and identification of the salient features of the case are essential. Even if a general practitioner does not wish to provide implant treatment, it is almost certain that he or she will be caring for patients with implant-supported restorations. A component of that care will be assessment of the health of the implant restoration(s) for which an understanding of implant dentistry is essential.”

For those wishing to perform implant treatment themselves, it is crucial that any training undertaken is carefully designed to provide both the theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience clinicians need to ensure their clinical competency.

Through SmileTube.tv, practitioners have access to a structured, blended learning programme that is tailored to equip them with the necessary knowledge and skill to place and restore dental implants, in a safe environment. The course involves four online modules, which can be completed at a time and from a place of the delegate’s choosing for ultimate engagement and effectiveness of learning. Training concludes with eight clinical days where delegates can develop practical skills for placing and restoring implants, while under the supervision of leading implant practitioners across the country and with access to cutting-edge facilities.

“The SmileTube.tv ‘Ultimate Implant Year Course’ delivered in partnership with Nobel Biocare provides delegates with the core knowledge and competence in implant dentistry expected of a GDP, as described by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh for the Diploma in Implant Dentistry at the College,” continues Ken. “The knowledge component of the course, and assessment of that knowledge, is delivered online through the purpose designed e-learning platform SmileTube.tv, and delegates are able to revisit any material as many times as they need for the duration of the course. The clinical skills component, and skills assessment, is delivered through one of a network of clinical training centres throughout the UK and Ireland.

“I believe Nobel Biocare to be a global leader in implant dentistry with a hugely impressive and well documented track record. It is a proactive, innovative and forward-thinking company keen to support education and training for the GDP, which arguably offers the most comprehensive range of services, products and materials in the industry. The latest implant design from Nobel Biocare, the NobelParallel® Conical Connection (CC) implant will be one of the implant designs used on the SmileTube.tv course and promises to be an excellent platform for the newcomer to implant dentistry.

“As Nobel Biocare has been innovative in its approach to implant dentistry, SmileTube.tv has been innovative in its approach to education and training in the field. We hope to develop a passionate, global learning community, pushing the boundaries of education and training in implant dentistry to provide a better experience for our learners and a safe and predictable outcome for their patients.”

Add value to patient care with Ten Dental

Add value to patient care with Ten Dental

Dr Senthan Perinparajah from Smiles Dental Epsom has been particularly impressed with the in-depth and comprehensive nature of the Implant Restoration Course run by the experts at Ten Dental:

“I attended the first course in 2013 with the aim of improving my skill set and providing an additional service to my patients.

“It was fantastic and the tutoring knowledge of Dr Nik Sisodia and Dr Martin Wanendeya was excellent. They provided me with a comprehensive foundation to implant restoration, and through the hands-on elements of the course I am much more confident in placing implant restorations.

“The intimate, almost one-to-one training provided by Nik and Martin allowed me to clarify any queries that I had, and I now have an increased understanding of how to restore more extensive complex cases.

“Offering implant restorations in the practice has added more value to the patient care we are able to provide, as being their referring dentist I have been involved with their treatment from beginning to end.”

Technology and education: Improving patient care - Dr Amit Patel and Donna Schembri

Technology and education: Improving patient care

Speaking at EuroPerio8 on Thursday June 4th, Dr Amit Patel and Donna Schembri explored the concept of ‘Seeing the Unseen’ - Utilising Fluorescent Technology for Optimal Periodontal Care.

With the two speakers covering the subjects of diagnosis, communication and the treatment of periodontal disease and peri-implantitis, the message was clear: innovation changes products and progress changes behaviours.

Studies have shown that 40 - 80% of information is forgotten immediately by patients[i]. Donna therefore noted that if you want your patients to be better informed about periodontal disease, you need to find better ways to enhance their understanding. By replacing dental jargon with emotive wording and replacing negative and daunting connotations of treatment with positivity, this has the potential to empower and motivate your patients - increasing your chance of success and improving overall patient care.

With comfort and increased effectiveness at the forefront of innovation, Donna and Amit firmly believe that by using the right technology and products you can minimise the presence of plaque on teeth and dental implants: achieving the ultimate goal of tooth loss prevention.

Using photos and videos for examples, the fluorescence protocol was put to the test with demonstrations of how pioneering products can be utilised to treat and maintain periodontal disease effectively. Both speakers also highlighted the need for

continued focus on educating patients about the differences between supragingival cleaning, subgingival cleaning, root planning, use of medication and x-ray and follow up treatment. They need to be informed of the benefits of prophylaxis as well; those being tartar removal, aesthetics and fresher breath.

Examples of cutting-edge products mentioned included Acteon’s Newtron P5xs ultrasonic generator, the Air n Go easy airpolisher and the Soprocare - which utilises state of the art photonics technologies. With products like these, patients can reap the benefits of accurate detection, quick visual follow up, comfort, oral hygiene education and complete removal of plaque and stains with minimally invasive treatment.

As the question and answering session post lecture depicted, the main concerns highlighted among professionals included patient’s lack of understanding. “It is a relationship,” Dr Amit Patel explained, “Give them the tools to do it themselves and lead them in the right direction.”

It would seem then that the answer to better patient care is twofold: improve patient understanding and rapport to empower patients to look after themselves and utilise technology to see better and treat faster.

On Saturday June 6th, Ziv Mazor examined the concept of Minimal Invasive Surgery Utilizing Piezo Surgical Device - Optimizing Biological and Functional Outcome in the Posterior Maxilla, once again sponsored by Acteon.

In order to explore invasive surgery, Mazor first identified potential obstacles that can occur during treatment.

He noted that implant placement in the atrophic posterior maxilla often causes complications due to the quality and volume of the bone that is available. With the height and width of the residual ridge being affected by post-extraction resorption patterns, physical trauma, periodontal disease and pneumatisation of the sinus, he highlighted that longer and wider implants are needed to enhance long-term survival.

Research points towards infected sockets being the most common cause of post-extraction complications, with a study showing a percentage of 48.7. Bleeding sockets came second with 41% and retained roots caused 10.3% of problems[ii].

Recent innovation in this area highlights that trauma to the tissues and the underling bone can be eliminated, minimising both the procedure time and post-operative complications.

With sinus lifts and osteotome techniques often being associated with higher morbidity rates and complication risks, technological advances are a revelation in achieving a reduced risk and high standard of patient care.

Mazor went on to suggest that with the use of reliable, powerful and simple products such as Piezotome® ultrasonic surgery unit from Acteon, there are fewer complications and emphasis can be instead placed on the application of autologous growth factors. By utilising the sinus lift balloon technique, patients can also benefit from the reduction of risk to damage of the Schneiderian membrane. An example of this product is the Sinus Lift Kit by Acteon, which offers the practitioner a straightforward and safe answer to the sinus lift operation.

The point of this lecture was clear: in reducing complications with the aid of innovative technology, ultimate function of patient dentition can be reached in a shorter time period and risk-free way.

Thus there is a noticeable change in the direction of periodontology. The products that are being developed are innovative and effective not just because of what they can do for professionals, but also for how they engage and empower the patient.
