Campaign launched to prevent unnecessary extractions

Julian Webber and other leading dental professionals have launched the Saving Teeth Awareness Campaign - www.savingteeth.co.uk - to provide information to patients who have a tooth infection that could result in tooth loss. The campaign was prompted by the widespread lack of awareness amongst patients that many teeth can be saved by root canal therapy.

Lego heads spearhead National Orthodontic Week

Two life-size Lego models showing mouths ‘before’ and ‘after’ treatment were the centrepiece of the British Orthodontic Society’s National Orthodontic Week (NOW) at the V & A Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green, London. The event ran for the week with events across the country as well at the museum. To mark the start of the week, a survey was undertaken by YouGov to discover the public’s view on protruding teeth.

Goodwill value falls to 84% of turnover

Goodwill as a percentage of fee income for sales was 84 per cent and for valuations it stood at 90 per cent according to the latest survey by the National Association of Specialist Dental Accountants (NASDA). This compares with nearly 100 per cent this time last year. There was no significant difference on the location of the practice or whether it was mainly private or NHS.

NHS access continues to improve - slowly

The NHS Information Centre has published its latest figures on access and treatment. For the fifth consecutive quarter, the number of patients seen has exceeded the March 2006 baseline; when the current dental contract was introduced. A total of 28.9 million patients were seen, an increase of 2.7 per cent on 2006. The percentage of the population seen by an NHS dentist, at 55.8 per cent, is equal to the March 2006 level.

NHS Charges in Wales frozen again

The cost of seeing a dentist will be frozen at its 2006 level, Welsh Health Minister Edwina Hart has announced. She said â€œBy freezing dental charges in Wales for the fifth year running, we are maintaining access to NHS dentistry for the people of Wales, ensuring charges remain affordable and in doing so helping to tackle oral health inequalities.
