GDC issues warning leaflet for patients

As part of its campaign to raise public awareness of safety in relation to tooth whitening, the General Dental Council (GDC) has launched a new publication: Considering tooth whitening? The GDC is warning the public against tooth whitening conducted illegally by unregulated persons.

Half the population don’t brush at bedtime

Nearly half of the population (47 per cent) has admitted to regularly skipping brushing their teeth at bedtime putting their oral health at risk. Women are the most likely to break one of the three golden rules for clean and healthy teeth, with nearly six out of ten (59 per cent) regularly skipping brushing their teeth at bedtime, compared to just over a third of men (35 per cent).

Southampton given go-ahead for fluoridation

A High Court judge has rejected a final appeal against the decision not to allow a judicial review of claims that the Strategic Health Authority failed to properly assess arguments against the proposals before giving them their unanimous backing. Campaigners have admitted they have reached the ‘end of the road’ in their legal bid to stop fluoridation in Southampton.

Dentist MP questions minister on tooth whitening

Sir Paul Beresford MP and dentist raised the problems of dental bleaching in a House of Commons adjournment debate, including the EU restrictions, recent Trading Standards actions and unlicensed beauty salons. The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, Edward Davey MP, gave a sympathetic reply.

The BDTA is linking up with Dentaid to encourage the dental team to donate their unwanted hand instruments at this year’s exhibition.

Is your washer disinfector safe?

New research has found harmful fungal pathogens living in extreme conditions in some of the most common household appliances, such as dishwashers. Some of these are potentially dangerous to human health. The new paper, published in the British Mycological Society journal, Fungal Biology, shows that these sites make perfect habitats for extremotolerant fungi (which includes black yeasts). There could be implcations for dental washer disinfectors.
