Dentist wins race to chair GDC

Orthodontist Professor Kevin O’Brien has been elected to be Chair of the General Dental Council, to succeed Alison Lockyer. The result was announced in London Wednesday 21 September, at 5.30pm.

GDPUK welcomes the election of a dentist to this important role.

OFT to investigate dentistry both NHS and private

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has launched a new study into dentistry, both private and NHS, across the whole of the UK. The OFT plans to complete the study by March 2012. The last study followed a super-complaint in 2003. The BDA said the report ‘had the potential to be useful’, but must deliver a thorough report that considers the pressures that shape dentistry in the UK.

Health Committee slams CQC management

Senior management at the Care Quality Commission (CQC), including chief executive, Cynthia Bower, have come under attack from the House of Commons Health Committee for allowing its priorities to become distorted by the deadline for the registration of dentists. This led directly to a drop of 70 per cent in inspection activity during the second half of 2010-11.

Dental Directory, 40 years old

GDPUK has an exclusive interview with Martin Mills, celebrating the 40th anniversary of Dental Directory.

The Dental Directory started life in 1971 as the Billericay Dental Supply Company. Founded by Gordon Mills who remains the company chairman, the fledgling business began by offering a mail order service. Although Gordon, his son Martin and other staff would visit dentists if requested, it wasn’t until 1988 that the first sales representative was employed by which time the company had been renamed The Dental Directory.

BDA Museum buys ‘dentist’ picture

The BDA Museum has bought ‘The Dentist’, by renowned portrait artist, Sir John Lavery. Painted in 1929, it features dentist Conrad Ackner in situ treating his patient, the artist’s wife, Lady Lavery. An appeal for help in raising the £60,000 required for the purchase saw donations flood in from individuals and BDA branches as well as a subsidy by national charities.

John Milne protests to Minister over seniority pay

John Milne, chairman of the General Dental Practice Committee, is writing to the health minister, Earl Howe, to express dentists’ anger at the removal of seniority pay for those reaching 55 from this April. He is seeking an urgent meeting to discuss possible solutions, stressing that dentists have contributed to the costs of seniority pay throughout their careers.
