None of ‘usual suspects’ wants to replace Nicholson

In an interview with Health Service Journal, Sir Malcolm Grant, NHS England chair, has revealed that all of NHS England’s current national directors have ruled themselves out of replacing Sir David Nicholson. He also said he will consider people ‘from outside the UK and with no health service experience as candidates to be the organisation’s chief executive.’

GDPUK breaks records again

GDPUK is proud to announce that August was a record month for the dental community website. In August alone the site had 30,123 unique visitors who made a total of 125,072 visits, meaning that the site averaged over 4000 visits a day. Unique visitors and number of visits has grown rapidly in 2013 which is due to the continued popularity of the forum, the regular dental news and a focus on a range of dental-related blogs.

Not all DCPs have met CPD requirements

More than 35,000 (35,733) dental care professionals (DCPs) have declared that they have met the General Dental Council’s (GDC) Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements. However that left 1,947 who failed to declare the necessary 150 CPD hours (of which 50 hours must be verifiable).

Dentist struck off for offering to perform female circumcision

A dentist has been struck off by the General Dental Council (GDC) following a public hearing at which it was found proved that he conducted an inappropriate intimate examination on a woman and offered to perform female circumcision on two children. The allegations against Omar Sheikh Mohamed Addow were heard by the GDC‘s Professional Conduct Committee.

Professor Lamey fails in High Court bid
Professor Philip Lamey, who is facing the resumption of a GDC hearing into malpractice allegations this autumn, has failed in a High Court bid to prevent the Belfast Health Trust from deciding on his future employment. Mr Justice Deeney ruled that the authority was justified in holding a meeting, which could see him dismissed without having to wait the outcome of the General Dental Council (GDC) hearing.

 Francis Report action plan approved by GDC

The General Dental Council (GDC) has set out its action plan in response to recommendations contained in the Francis Report.  The first recommendation of the Francis Report into the failings at Mid Staffordshire NHS Trust is that all those involved in the provision or regulation of health care services must set out how they intend to respond to the report's findings and recommendations. This action plan is the GDC's response to this recommendation.
