Professor Steve Field to be chief inspector of general practice at CQC

Professor Steve Field will join CQC from NHS England and will lead the inspection and regulation of primary care services across the public, private and independent sectors. Professor Field said: “I am thrilled at being appointed the first Chief Inspector of General Practice in England. I see this as a wonderful opportunity to highlight what’s good in general practice and dentistry, and to shine a light on what isn’t.”

Link found between Alzheimer's disease and poor dental health

People with poor oral hygiene could be at higher risk of developing Alzheimer's compared with those who have healthy mouths, according to recent research from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan). The presence of porphyromonas gingivalis in the brains of patients who had dementia when they were alive. The bacterium is usually associated with chronic periodontal disease.

GDP gains research funding award

GDP gains research funding award

A general dental practitioner from South Yorkshire has been awarded more than £164,000 to investigate whether dental filling materials that contain plastics act as environmental pollutants. Dr Steven Mulligan, an associate dentist at practices in Rotherham and Sheffield and Honorary Clinical fellow at Sheffield University, will lead a two-year research project that is expected to commence in January 2014.

UK graduates to be given preference for Foundation Training

Applications for Dental Foundation Training (DFT) in 2014 opened on August 23. Hidden in the new ‘Person Specification’ it says that it is ‘desirable’ that the candidate requires DFT ‘as the only route to access the NHS Dental Performers List’. UK graduates should therefore have preference over those from the rest of the EEA in the coming round.

Dentists’ income fell in 2011/12
Statistics released on 22nd August 2013 by the Health and Social Care Information Centre (http://tinyurl.com/k4kkxzm) show that self-employed primary care dentists in England and Wales in 2011/12 had gross earnings decreasing more than total expenses resulting in a drop in taxable income. The figures cover NHS and private income for those working in the NHS, but do not include those working only in the private sector, nor corporates.
