New Fitness to Practise panel members join GDC

The General Dental Council (GDC) has announced that 33 new Fitness to Practise (FtP) panel members joined the regulator on 27 August 2013. Nine dentists, 12 lay members and 11 dental care professionals were recruited and will now be phased into hearings through to the end of this year.  They will sit on the Interim Orders, Professional Conduct, Health, Performance and Registration Appeals Committees.

Last Monday the BDA sent its staff a consultation letter as the first stage in making widespread redundancies. GDPUK believes this has been brought about as a result of the new three-tier membership system introduced in June. Overwhelmingly members have chosen the cheapest option, causing a substantial reduction in subscription income allegedly amounting to millions of pounds.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) must properly understand the reality of primary care dentistry if it is to make a fresh start in regulating the sector, the British Dental Association (BDA) has warned. Martin Fallowfield, the BDA PEC Chair, said: “We are pleased to see the CQC articulating its intention to make a new start. Dental practices have, thus far, endured a mixed experience of the organisation.

The importation and sale of counterfeit medical products is a significant issue for the dental industry and the BDTA urges all buyers to be suspicious of deals that seem “too good to be true”. BDTA President, Terry Porter comments, “The recent repeat of the BBC’s “Fake Britain” programme featuring counterfeit dental equipment serves as a stark reminder for all of us involved in dentistry. I would urge all practices and buyers to purchase through a reputable source and be wary of equipment offered at knock down prices”.

Pioneering new endo treatment for young patients announced

Regenerative Endodontics, a new treatment for saving the teeth of adolescents, is likely to enter the dental mainstream, predicts Julian Webber of Harley Street Centre for Endodontics. He has welcomed the new procedure which potentially allows endodontists to save immature posterior and anterior teeth without the need for conventional root canal treatment.

The managing director of Genix Healthcare, Mustafa Mohammed, is investing £1m in a new facility in Leeds to offer manufacturing and training facilities and job opportunities for 200, including apprentices. With many practices now outsourcing their lab work to overseas laboratories, the British dental technician trade has taken a sharp decline in recent years. The new facility Sparkle Dental Laboratories Ltd  is looking to change this.
