Thin pickings for dentists in Birthday Honours

Two dental professionals were honoured in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.  Dr Selina Master was appointed MBE. She is national dental lead - Virgin Care and received the award for services to vulnerable people and improving oral health. Also made an MBE was Tony Griffin, dental technician, for services to dental technology.

Tony Jacobs chairs LDC Conference

Tony Jacobs took the chair at the 63rd Annual Conference of Local Dental Committees held in Manchester on June 13. In addition to motions, John Milne, Chair of GDPC, Barry Cockcroft, Chief Dental Officer, Eddie Crouch and Alisdair McKendrick initiated debates. The conference was preceded by dinner the previous evening.

GDC extremely disappointed by Queens Speech omission

The General Dental Council (GDC) says it is ‘extremely disappointed’ at lack of Bill on professional regulation in Queen's Speech. GDC Chief Executive and Registrar Evlynne Gilvarry has written to all registrants and said: “The absence of a Bill in today's Queen's Speech which would enable changes that are critical to patient protection is extremely disappointing.”

Department launches consultation on contract changes

The Department of Health (DH) has launched an ‘engagement exercise’ on the way forward for reform of the GDP contract. It is particularly aimed at the dental profession and wider dental community, from whom comments are invited. These will influence the next stage of reform, which is expected to start during 2015/16, and will see a limited number of practices testing one or more variants of possible new systems. The consultation runs until the end of July 2014 and the relevant papers can be found at:

GDC takes action against dental technicians

GDC takes action against dental technicians

The General Dental Council (GDC) has taken action against three dental technicians in recent weeks. Luis Fairman who created the infamous metal teeth for James Bond villain Jaws was fined £500 at Bodmin Magistrates Court for claiming to be a dental technician, although not registered. Frank Mulholland from Liverpool, was fined £2,500 for a similar offence. Finally Paul Kettle from Bolton has been erased from the register for misconduct.

ITV documentary to highlight Manchester Dental School

ITV documentary to highlight Manchester Dental School

Staff and patients from the University Dental Hospital of Manchester are the subject of a new observational documentary airing on ITV in mid-June. Programme-makers spent eight weeks at the Dental Hospital which is staffed by Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and The University of Manchester’s Dental School.
