Dentist alleges he is owed £241K by NHS

A Lancashire dentist claims he has not been paid since March this year. Ramyras Gaiziunas, from Lithuania, says he is owed £250,000 by the NHS. The 59-year-old’s surgery has more than 6,500 patients on the books and has been in contract with the NHS since 2006. He says he has had this amount taken away in clawback.

50 BDA members say ?Vote for Me?

There will be a record breaking number of candidates in the forthcoming election to the BDA’s Principal Executive Committee (PEC). A total of 50 members are now standing, drawn from the whole spectrum of the dental profession. Chief Executive Peter Ward said: “We have been bowled over by the sheer number of members who have put themselves forward for our forthcoming elections”.

The British Dental Association (BDA) has announced that it has initiated Judicial Review proceedings against the professional regulator the General Dental Council (GDC). The BDA has accused the GDC of failing to provide clear evidence of the policy or business case that have underpinned the proposed 64% fee rise - rendering the regulator’s case unlawful.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is warning dentists about the potential danger of buying and using counterfeit and unapproved dental equipment. This follows the seizure of over 12,000 different pieces of poor quality dental equipment imported into the UK from China and Pakistan and sold on auction websites such as eBay, Amazon and Alibaba in the past 6 months.

Further new consultation on amalgam launched in Europe

One of the European Commission's (EC) top scientific bodies, the Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR), is calling for public comment on a new report in which it largely downplays concerns about exposure to mercury in dental amalgam while saying that further study is needed. The report was opened for public comment on 9 September 2014, is similar to its 2008 report.
