The British Dental Association (BDA), as a member of the HPV Alliance, is urging the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) to consider blanket immunisation against human papillomavirus (HPV). Dr Graham Stokes, Chair of the BDA Health and Science Committee, said they welcomed this indication that the JCVI is recognising the need to extend vaccination beyond girls, but they need to go further.”

Several justices at a recent hearing of the US Supreme Court sounded troubled over efforts by a North Carolina dental board to drive unlicensed teeth-whitening services out of business. “The object of the antitrust laws is to prevent private individuals who compete with each other in business from getting together and making agreements,” Justice Stephen G. Breyer said. “That kind of interest seems present here.”
In support of European Antibiotic Awareness Day on the 18th November, the FGDP(UK) has made the entire text of “Antimicrobial Prescribing For General Dental Practitioners” freely available to view on its website (www.fgdp.org.uk) until the end of the month. Dr Graham Stokes, Chair of the BDA Health and Science Committee also said: “The battle against antimicrobial resistance will require concerted action by individuals, agencies and governments. And that is why the British Dental Association is stepping up”.
GDC Chief Executive and Registrar, Evlynne Gilvarry, has written an article for the dental press on its recent decision to raise the ARF. She says that the additional funds raised in 2015 will help to ensure that the GDC meets the challenge of making the improvements necessary to be ‘a more effective and efficient regulator’. But she ends by criticising the BDA for its decision to seek Judicial Review on the issue.
In a consensus statement published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine a group of UCL-led health experts and sporting bodies have called for action to tackle poor oral health among athletes. They said that poor oral health affecting athletes' general health and performance shows 'no signs of improvement' and must be remedied.
Since June 2014 NHS England in Nottinghamshire has been working with Public Health England to investigate apparent breaches of infection control procedures by a dentist in Nottinghamshire. BDA’s John Milne said: “There is absolutely no excuse for putting patients at risk. We champion the highest standards in dentistry, and rigorous infection control procedures need to be at the heart of any practice, large or small”.
