BDA demands clarity from GDC - or else

The BDA has told the GDC – ‘come clean, or we'll seek court order’.  Mick Armstrong, Chair of the PEC, said: “From the start the GDC has stubbornly refused to disclose the key information behind its planned fee hike. We’ve sought reasonable clarity but all we have been left with is a growing list of unanswered questions. Well today we couldn’t be clearer - the GDC has to come clean or we will seek a court order.”

Dental practice market still ?very strong?

The latest goodwill survey from NASDAL for the quarter ending July 31st reflects a buoyant market for the sale and purchase of dental practices, with NHS contracts still a strong selling point. NASDAL member Alan Suggett said that the average goodwill value secured for a practice with an NHS contract was 144% of gross fee income and for a mixed practice it was 116% of turnover.

Acodent laboratory goes into administration

The largest dental laboratory in the UK has gone into administration with the loss of 120 jobs according to reports in the local newspaper The Bolton News. Workers at the lab said they were told they were being made redundant before being asked to leave the premises. Leeds-based accountant Mazars has been appointed administrator.

US Supreme Court to hear tooth whitening case

In a case that has parallels with the UK, the US Supreme Court will hear a case on whether non-dentists can carry out tooth whitening. The North Carolina Board of Dental Examiners is challenging a Federal Trade Commission order that said the board is trying to kill off competition from day spas and tanning booths that offer teeth-whitening.

Cost of child extractions is over £30 million

In reply to a question by dentist peer Baroness Gardner of Parkes, health minister Earl Howe revealed the cost to be £3.1 million for minor extractions and £27.4 million for multiple teeth – a total of £30.5 million. The data covers all tooth extractions in hospital, and does not distinguish between deciduous or adult teeth.

Northern Ireland consultant struck off

Professor Philip John Lamey has been struck off by the General Dental Council (GDC) following a public hearing into multiple allegations of poor care, patient management and record keeping. Of 215 allegations, 110 were found proved. The proven facts in this case relate to the treatment of 27 patients between 2006 and 2010. They relate to a period when he was working as a Consultant in Oral Medicine at the School of Dentistry, Belfast.
