The General Dental Council (GDC) is reminding dental professionals to be proactive in assuring themselves that the verifiable continuing professional development (CPD) they undertake has adequate quality controls in place. This follows the GDC's recent publication of an advice sheet on Quality Controls for Verifiable CPD.

Nick de Bois, Conservative MP for Enfield North, asked what representations he had had from the BDA about the ‘recent practices’ of the GDC. Minister Daniel Poulter outlined the contacts he and colleagues had had with the Association.
The poorest people in society have eight fewer teeth by their seventies than the richest, one of the biggest studies of its type ever undertaken has revealed. Lead author, Professor Jimmy Steele: “It’s probably not a big surprise that poorer people have worse dental health than the richest, but the surprise is just how big the differences can be and how it affects people.”
Two Northampton dentists have successfully challenged NHS England’s guidance relating to incorporation of their NHS contracts. NASDAL members, Accountant Alan Suggett and solicitor Ray Goodman both congratulate the dentists and their barrister on their success in achieving changes to their contracts. However, they say that the guidance remains unfair and ambiguous and they are offering to help NHS England redraft the guidance to remove the postcode lottery on incorporation.
The British Dental Association (BDA), as a member of the HPV Alliance, is urging the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) to consider blanket immunisation against human papillomavirus (HPV). Dr Graham Stokes, Chair of the BDA Health and Science Committee, said they welcomed this indication that the JCVI is recognising the need to extend vaccination beyond girls, but they need to go further.”
Several justices at a recent hearing of the US Supreme Court sounded troubled over efforts by a North Carolina dental board to drive unlicensed teeth-whitening services out of business. “The object of the antitrust laws is to prevent private individuals who compete with each other in business from getting together and making agreements,” Justice Stephen G. Breyer said. “That kind of interest seems present here.”
