BOS launches online resource for adult orthodontic treatment

The British Orthodontic Society (BOS) has launched a new online resource to support the decision-making of the rising number of adults opting for orthodontic treatment. The new publication – The BOS Guide to Orthodontics for Adults - is a first for BOS in that it’s designed for patients to read before they see a clinician. Good news about decline in decay among 5-year olds

Tooth decay among five-year-olds continues significant decline, according to the oral health survey published by Public Health England. Less than 25% of the cohort suffers from tooth decay, a 20 per cent drop since 2008. Sandra White, director of dental public health at Public Health England, said: “This is great news. However, one child with tooth decay is one too many.”

Kings Dental Institute tops student rankings

The Dental Institute has scored an unmatched 98% overall satisfaction in the 2015 National Student Survey, the highest rating for any programme of study at King’s College London. The achievement shows a 5% rise on the 2014 results, showcasing the high standard of education performed at the faculty. Earlier this year Dentistry at King’s wasranked first in the UK, and had risen to fourth in the world.

Colette Bridgman to be CDO Wales

Dr Colette Bridgman MBE has been appointed Wales’ new Chief Dental Officer, the Welsh Government has announced She has been a Consultant in Dental Public Health in the North West of England since 2003, and strategic dental lead for Greater Manchester since 2013. She has also held appointments in Public Health England and the Office of the Deputy Chief Dental Officer for NHS England.

The British Dental Association (BDA) has called on the profession to lend its support to gender neutral vaccinations for the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). The BDA is one of 44 organisations supporting the HPV Action coalition – that is looking to see the current UK vaccination programme for girls extended to include all adolescent boys.

Ian Brack confirmed as GDC Chief Executive

Ian Brack has been confirmed as the new permanent Chief Executive and Registrar of the General Dental Council (GDC), having been interim CEO since 11 January 2016. He said: “I have been struck by the commitment, dedication and enthusiasm I have witnessed at the GDC and how hard staff work to ensure we ultimately achieve our mission of protecting patients.”
