NHS drive to get children to see dentist at age one

The Sunday Times has reported that parents will be urged to take their children to the dentist by the age of one, according to the chief dental officer, as part of an NHS drive to reduce high rates of tooth extractions among pre-school children. The British Society of Paediatric Dentistry (BSPD) and NHS England will this week launch a campaign, “Dental Check by One”.

Woman damaged by illegal whitening

James Wills, who is not a registered dentist, was prosecuted after carrying out the procedure of tooth whitening. He was found guilty of two charges of practising as an unregistered dentist after he failed to turn up for the hearing in Huddersfield. Magistrates fined Willis £440. He will gave to pay a total of £225 to the complainants and the full prosecution costs of £4,150.

NHS Digital releases earnings data for GDPs

Providing-Performer dentists (Principals) had higher gross earnings, total expenses and taxable income than Performer Only dentists (Associates) in keeping with previous years. For Associates in 2015/16 average taxable income from NHS and private dentistry was £60,200, compared to £59,900 in 2014/15, a 0.4 percent increase, which is not statistically significant.

Dentists in Wales thinking of leaving dentistry

Three quarters of dentists in Wales have thought about leaving the profession according to a NHS Digital report. Nearly three quarters of dentists who provide both services and practice in Wales have recently considered leaving dentistry. BDA Wales claimed “savage pay cuts” are having a major impact on morale and the ability to recruit to the industry.

The House of Commons Health Select Committee membership has been announced (by Twitter). Dr Sarah Wollaston was re-elected unopposed to the Chair before the recess. There are 10 more members,  5 Conservative (including the chair), 5 Labour and 1 SNP (although health matters in Scotland are devolved to their Parliament.
