A Cardiff refugee has become the first in Wales to benefit from a loan system that will help him regain the ability to work as a dentist. He has got a £10,000 loan from RefuAid which supports skilled refugees back into work and has so far helped 12. Mohammed Al-Homsi qualified in Syria but needs to re-qualify to practise in the UK.

Hospital extractions continue to rise

The Local Government Association has claimed that hospitals carried out multiple tooth extractions on around 170 children every working day in the UK last year. There were 42,911 hospital procedures to remove teeth from patients aged 18 and under in 2016-17 at a cost of more than £36 million. There has been a rise of 17% over the past four years, up from 36,833 in 2012-13.

Hunt given responsibility for social care in reshuffle

Prime Minister, Theresa May, left Jeremy Hunt as Health Secretary in her Cabinet reshuffle and gave him additional responsibilities for social care. Two new ministers of state have been appointed, Stephen Barclay MP for North East Cambridgeshire and Caroline Dinenage MP for Gosport. The previous minister, Phillip Dunne MP has left the Government.

Faculty prepares for transition to College

The Faculty of General Dental Practice UK (FGDP) has announced the membership of a ‘Transition Board’ as it works to establish an independent College for general dental practice. It is chaired by Prof Nairn Wilson and members are Kevin Lewis, Duncan Rudkin, formerly of the GDC, Neil Sawbridge, a former chief financial officer and Dr Mick Horton, Dean of FGDP.
