New survey shows negligence claims are rising

A new YouGov survey commissioned by Dental Protection shows that 43% of the public believe there are now more marketing campaigns by ‘No Win No Fee’ firms compared to five years ago. Raj Rattan, Dental Director said: “Our data shows that a full time general dental practitioner can now expect to receive two clinical negligence claims over a typical career.”

The agenda for this year’s LDC conference, to be held in Belfast on 7-8 June, is being finalised. This year it is expected to debate around 60 motions, including contract reform. Joe Hendron, Chair of the 2018 LDCs Annual Conference, said: “Since we’re having our annual conference in Belfast, it seems fitting to look at the impact of devolution on dentistry.”

Researchers at the University of Washington have designed a convenient and natural product that uses proteins to rebuild tooth enamel and treat dental cavities. "Remineralization guided by peptides is a healthy alternative to current dental health care," said lead author Mehmet Sarikaya, professor of materials science and engineering at the university.

Welcome from the profession for the sugar drinks levy

The introduction of a levy on drinks with high sugar content has been welcomed across the profession, with the BDA describing it as ‘an excellent first step’. However some commentators in the media have questioned the policy. Drinks containing more than 8g of sugar per 100ml, will be taxed at 24p per litre, with those above 5g per 100ml charged an 18p levy.
