GDC lay member appointment announced

New GDC appointment announced

Terry Babbs will be joining the GDC as a lay Council member. He will also chair the GDC’s Finance and Performance Committee. Terry is currently a member of the Investment Board of Oxfam's Enterprise Development Programme. He is also presently non-executive Chair of Partner Africa and a non-executive director of the Legal Services Board, where he is Chair of the Audit and Risk Assurance Committee.

Mr Babbs replaces outgoing FPC Chair Michael Carroll. Commenting on the appointment, William Moyes, Chair of the General Dental Council, said: “Terry is joining the GDC at a significant time as we push ahead with a programme to reform the current dental regulatory system, working with the profession and our partners. We’ve put a great deal of effort into improving our performance, which is shown in the breadth and depth of engagement with stakeholders. We have got to the point where we can now seriously focus on leading reforms to the complex system of regulation.

“Terry’s wealth of experience will be an asset to the GDC as we move forward in our ambition to become an efficient and high performing organisation that continues to put patient safety at the heart of what we do. I am delighted he will be joining us. I also want to thank Michael Carroll for his contribution during his time at the GDC in helping to develop and improve our systems for managing information and financial forecasting capabilities.”

Commenting on his appointment, Terry Babbs said: “I am pleased to be joining the GDC at such an exciting time. I am passionate about driving improvements in patient safety. I believe this can be achieved by collaborative working with an evidence based approach which is underpinned by efficient systems and processes. I hope my contribution to the GDC Council will help make a difference to patient safety, which in turn helps to ensure public confidence in dental care. How about trying your luck? The FPC challenges and monitors the GDC’s financial and operational performance, and works with the Executive to develop the business plan and annual budget
