Acodent laboratory goes into administration

The largest dental laboratory in the UK has gone into administration with the loss of 120 jobs according to reports in the local newspaper The Bolton News. Workers at the lab said they were told they were being made redundant before being asked to leave the premises. Leeds-based accountant Mazars has been appointed administrator.
One technician who has worked for the lab for more than 10 years said he was “fuming” at the situation. The worker, who asked not to be named, told the paper: “At around 3pm were called into a meeting and asked to bring our personal belongings. We were all being made redundant and that was pretty much it. The meeting didn’t last longer than 10 minutes. We were then herded out like cattle and the gates were locked. There has been something going on for the last three months. We also haven’t been paid this month’s wage. We’ve not got any redundancy pay yet and we’re all jobless.”
The administrator has pledged to help up to 115 staff claim redundancy payments. “Acodent had run into financial difficulties and the company announced the majority of staff had lost their jobs,” a statement from Mazars said. “Staff did not receive the salary payments due to them on Wednesday. Unfortunately, given the current state of the company’s finances any outstand wages will not be paid. This is clearly very distressing and upsetting for the former staff and their families and we will be assisting them in claiming redundancy payments from the government’s national insurance fund. It is still too early to comment on the future of Acodent and we are currently looking at a number of options.”
Acodent, run by Peter Smith and his wife Aileen, is the biggest dental laboratory in the UK, specialising in crowns, bridges, implants and prosthetics for dentists here, in Ireland and in Europe.
