Bill Moyes ducks ARF issue

At its' 18th September meeting, the General Dental Council (GDC) had on its agenda a paper on the results of the recent ARF consultation. It was listed to be 'considered'. However before any discussion could take place the chairman, William Moyes, said that any discussion should be deferred until the October meeting when the decision on the ARF will be made. None of the members, either dental or lay, raised any objections to this course of action.

GDPUK News editor writes:

GDC meetings have to be held in public unless there are reasons for discussions to be ‘in camera’. It is probably unprecedented for the chair to stifle discussion on an item that is on the published agenda.

I was at the meeting and it was plain to me that Moyes was uneasy about having the public there, even though there were only a dozen of us. Before this item came up, he told someone who was recording proceedings not to do so. One of those described the chair’s actions as ‘disgraceful’.

There will be many who will question why Moyes acted in this way and how seriously those at the GDC took the consultation or the response. They may also wonder why not one of the dentists on the GDC wanted a full discussion.

Shouldn't this be brought to the attention of the PSA too? If it's all about how a regulator goes about their business, then this should be totally unacceptable.

Chris.
