More associates and more women in dental practice

More associates and more women latest data show

Of the 23,723 dentists who "performed" in NHS general dental services in the last year, 19,310 were associates; only 18.6% of dentists held a contract with the NHS, according to figures from the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC). The data also showed that 46% of the workforce were female and amongst the under-45s women were in the majority.

The HSCIC report shows that a total of 23,723 dentists performed NHS activity during 2013/14. This is an increase of 522 (2.2 per cent) on 2012/13, and 3,563 (17.7 per cent) more than 2006/07.

In 2013/14, there were 4,413 providing performer dentists (practice owners). These dentists have a direct contractual relationship with NHS England Area Team, and make up 18.6 per cent of all dentists. This proportion has been decreasing in each year and compares to 2006/07 when 37.6 per cent of dentists were providing performers.

The shift to a greater percentage of performer only dentists (associates) continues. In 2006/07, 62.4 per cent of dentists were performer only. This percentage has increased to 81.4 per cent in 2013/14.

The increase in the proportion of female dentists also continues. In 2013/14 this has risen to 46.1 per cent of the dental workforce, from 38.8 per cent in 2006/07. The number of female dentists stood at 10,944, a 3.8 per cent increase on the previous year and a 39.9 per cent increase on 2006/07. However among the under 35s the proportion of women stood at 53.9%; amongst the 35-44 year old cohort females accounted for 50.5%
