British public rates quality of orthodontic treatment

Nearly one fifth (19%) of the British public people believe they would benefit from orthodontic treatment according to a new survey. When asked what mattered most when choosing treatment, quality was rated as the most important aspect (90%), followed by cost (85%) and access to a specialist locally (82%). Treatment time was rated last at 73%.

The new research, carried out by Ipsos MORI and commissioned by the British Lingual Orthodontic Society revealed that 30% of people are aware of the lingual technique. The research shows that among those who knew of lingual orthodontics, it was thanks to family, friends or colleagues (44%). 12 per cent said the treatment was recommended by a dentist or orthodontist. Only 2% of those interviewed said they became aware of the technique as a result of news about celebrities - such as Myleene Klass, who has famously been pictured showing off her braces to photographers.

The survey also asked some general questions about attitudes to teeth and 37% of respondents said they cared more about their teeth today than 10 years ago and 38% of those who care more said this was due to the rise  of cosmetic dentistry.

Paul Ward, Chairman of BLOS, commented: “These findings demonstrate that the British public take an informed approach to orthodontic treatment. We are delighted that so many people are becoming aware of the availability of more discreet orthodontic treatment.”
