New chairman of Health Committee announced

The Rt Hon Stephen Dorrell has been elected by fellow MPs to chair the Health Select Committee. He beat fellow conservative MPs Sir Paul Beresford (a dentist), Peter Bone and Nadine Dorries. Mr Dorrell was first elected as MP for Loughborough in 1979, but has sat for Charnwood, also in Leicestershire, since 1997. He was Secretary of State for Health from 1995 to 1997.


 
Lords debate NHS dentistry

In the debate of the Queens speech, dentist Lord Colwyn raised the problems of dentistry in both the NHS and private sectors. He called on the coalition government to complete the unfinished reforms, learning from the mistakes of the much criticised 2006 contract, to pursue consistently high-quality commissioning of primary dental care and said there must be a commitment to tackling oral health inequalities. Replying Earl Howe said they would introduce a new NHS dentistry contract, but at this stage they needed to review the details of the system that they had inherited
